The game begins. The Lindblum theatre ship is flying through the air en-route to the Kingdom of Alexandria. Meanwhile, in the ship, a boy with a monkey tail enters a dark room.
The boy lights the candles in the centre of the room.
The door on the right opens and three characters enter the room.
Suddenly, a man wearing a dragon mask jumps down from the stairs and the first battle of the game begins.
After the fight, the dragon mask is removed revealing it to be the party's boss Baku.
The party moves into the meeting room.

Here's the plan!
Tantalus, the infamous band of daring thieves (that's us) is headin' to the Kingdom of Alexandria...
Our mission: to kidnap the heir to the throne, Princess Garnet!

The Lindblum theatre ship flies above the city of Alexandria, heading towards the castle. Meanwhile, in the town below a pointy-hat boy walks into view and trips over.
As the pointy-hat boy continues walking, a rat kid runs past and bumps into him.
Meanwhile, in another part of the town, a herald is guiding some nobles.
The pointy-hat boy enters the central district of the town and approaches the ticket booth.
The Ticketmaster gives the pointy-hat boy some cards.
The pointy-hat boy enters an alleyway, then trips over surprising the signmaker.
The signmaker walks off and the rat kid approaches the pointy-hat boy.
The rat kid steals the signmakers ladder and they run off towards the steeple.
They enter the steeple.
As the pointy-hat boy attempts to climb the steeple, a moogle falls from above, surprising him.

I sorry. I enter
you in Moogle Diary!
If you want to save game onto MEMORY CARD, just ask us moogles, kupo!
And you can regain health if you have a Tent, kupo!

The rat kid takes the sign makers ladder and climbs the steeple.
Another moogle enters the steeple.
Stiltzkin leaves the steeple.
The pointy-hat boy also climbs the steeple.
The rat kid starts moving across the rooftops encouraging the pointy-hat boy to follow.
Rat Kid
Come on! Get over here!
Lemme guess... You're afraid of heights, aren't you?
It's okay! Just pretend you're on the ground!

The pointy-hat boy hesitates to cross a wooden plank between two rooftops.
The wooden plank falls and the pointy-hat boy jumps onto the next rooftop.
They arrive at the castle wall.
After they enter the castle, a display of fireworks and fanfare commences as the stage on-board the flying theatre ship moves into view of the spectators. Baku steps onto the stage for the opening dialogue of the performance.

Tonight's performance is a story that takes place long, long ago.
Our heroine, Princess Cornelia, is torn from her lover, Marcus.
She attempts to flee the castle, only to be captured by her father, King Leo.
When our story begins, Marcus, having heard of this, crosses swords with the king.
And now, Your Royal Majesty, Queen Brahne, Your Highness, Princess Garnet...
...noble ladies and lords, and our rooftop viewers, Tantalus proudly presents 'I Want to Be Your Canary'!

Backstage Zidane, Blank and Cinna call out their opening lines and run onto the stage.
Zidane, Blank and Cinna run onto stage then confront King Leo.
A battle is fought between King Leo and his henchmen against Zidane and his party.
Blank stands in front of Zidane.
Zidane and Blank engage in a fake sword fight.
They move down to the spectator area and continue their sword fight.
The fight ends and they run off towards the castle.
